I was inspired by the anime and manga series Hajime no Ippo—especially its stark black-and-white panels, close crops, and the way a fight is paced between explosive impact and quiet tension. That influence shaped the grain, halftone texture, and panel-like sequencing of this series.
Jay Chung’s painting Rocked was another important reference. I was drawn to how the painting communicates a hit through distortion, movement, and the body’s reaction rather than a frozen instant. I wanted these photographs of Ethan Foley to feel less like straightforward event coverage and more like a fight unfolding across a page: tense, physical, and slightly unreal.
